The Qur’an is not a book of science, but it includes many scientific facts that are written in a clear and meaningful way. These scientific facts, which were unknown at the time of its revelation, were only discovered in the 20th century using modern technology. This shows even more proof that the Qur’an is truly the word of God. To understand the scientific miracles in the Qur’an, we need to look at what people knew about science when it was revealed.
In the 7th century, when the Qur’an was revealed, Arab society believed in many superstitions and ideas that were not based on science. They did not have the tools to study nature and the universe, so they relied on old stories passed down through generations. For example, they thought mountains held up the sky and that the earth was flat with tall mountains at the edges acting as pillars to keep the sky above.
The Qur’an corrected these false beliefs. In Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 2, it says:
ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِى رَفَعَ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍۢ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمْسَ وَٱلْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّۭ يَجْرِى لِأَجَلٍۢ مُّسَمًّۭى ۚ يُدَبِّرُ ٱلْأَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ لَعَلَّكُم بِلِقَآءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوقِنُونَ
It is Allah Who has raised the heavens without pillars—as you can see—then established Himself on the Throne. He has subjected the sun and the moon, each orbiting for an appointed term. He conducts the whole affair. He makes the signs clear so that you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord. (The Qur’an, 13:2).
This verse clearly shows that the sky does not need mountains to stay above us. The Qur’an revealed many important truths at a time when no one could have known them.
The Qur’an was revealed when people knew very little about topics like astronomy, physics, or biology. Yet it contains key information about the creation of the universe, the formation of humans, the physics of the atmosphere, and the delicate balance that makes life possible on Earth.
